What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine may be defined as the use of telecommunication technologies to provide medical services and information.

What traditionally occurs during a telemedicine visit?

As with a traditional clinic visit, you will be asked to share information about your present health concerns. A local health care practitioner may be present during this entire process and may be instructed to obtain a new set of vitals, any updated health information, and most recent laboratory records.

What about the technology?

During your telemedicine visit you will communicate and interact through the use of interactive video technology which directly links you with the telemedicine practitioner. Kansas University Center for TeleMedicine and TeleHealth ensures that all patient information and discussions transmitted over telemedicine technology occur with a strong focus on security and confidentiality.

Will my telemedicine visit be a part of my medical record?

Yes, if you give your consent, and sign releases, KU will share the information with whomever you designate by sending them a detailed description of your visit. The telemedicine practitioner will communicate their impressions and treatment recommendations with you and the local on-site practitioner, at the time of consultation.

Will my health insurance cover a telemedicine consult?

Some insurance carriers provide a telemedicine benefit, and more are expected to do so in the near future. If your carrier currently reimburses for telemedicine, it will be billed in the same manner as for a traditional consultation. In that event, you may be responsible for any deductibles, coinsurance, remaining balances, or co-payments. Call Cynthia Huebner at 620-421-6550 ext. for current costs.

Where can I get more information?

If you have any questions or require further information, your local telemedicine coordinator, Cynthia Huebner at (800) 362-0390 ext. 1734 or (620) 421-6550 ext. 1734, is available to answer many of your questions.
